CANYONING
or

descent of water canyons

What is a canyon ?

It is a steep-sided gorge surrounded by impressive rock formations. With cascading waterfalls, gorges, pools of deep water surrounded by vertical rock walls and natural waterslides canyons offer some of the most spectacular and unspoilt scenery around.

Canyoning is an exciting combination of walking, swimming and abseiling. It can also involve more adventurous moments like jumping into water pools and sliding down long waterslides.

Canyoning is a sport quite unlike any other, combining physical activity with the discovery of some of the most secretive and spectacular scenery about.

What equipment is needed ?

Wetsuits 5.5 mm thick, rubber foot protection, helmets, harnesses, guide ropes, watertight cans, waterproof bags. We supply all the necessary equipment apart from swimming costumes and shoes. What level of ability is required ? Canyoning is a sport everyone can enjoy. For water-lovers of all levels of ability from the age of 8 !

We offer 4 courses of different levels, from the family outing to the more strenuous trips :

Level 1 : (½ days or full days) Enjoy a taste of canyoning without abseiling. With no waterfall higher than 5m, all you need to do is jump or slide down the waterslide and there is always an easy way down the side of the waterfall. For the more adventurous, the same trip can be enjoyed with optional jumps 7 to 10m high including " toboggan d'Icare " etc. Perfect for a family outing as everyone can discover canyoning according to their own ability.

Level 2 : (full days) Canyoning for beginners able to overcome the following obstacles : 2 to 3m jumps, abseiling down waterfalls 10 to 20m high. ½ hour walk to reach canyon, 4 hours maximum in the water. The chance to discover enclosed canyons. Suitable for the more sporty.

Level 3 : (full days) You must already have experience in canyoning. 5 to 10m jumps, long waterslides requiring the right technique, abseiling over 30m or more. A 1 or 2hr walk may be necessary in order to reach starting point. Time spent in water may be more than 4hrs. A great tour for all enthusiasts with the possibility of visiting several canyons in one day.

Level 4 : (2 days) Go all the way down " La Bendola ". A spectacular canyon! It is the largest known canyon in France. This canyon situated in our region is 15km long. Set in totally unspoilt natural surroundings. There are more than 30 waterfalls one of which has a 65m drop. Expect a lot of walking and swimming. Starting at an altitude of 2000-2003m the descent takes you to Saorge, 1400m lower. Two days descent : 10hrs on the first day, camping rough, 7hrs the following day, a total of 17hrs canyoning.
